Garden Grove

Garden Grove is a large and dynamic city located in northern Orange County, in Southern California. As of the 2010 U.S. census, the city had a population of 171,012. California State Route 22, also called the Garden Grove Freeway, passes through the city going east-west. The city is known outside the Southern California area for being the location of Robert H. Schuller's “Crystal Cathedral,” from which religious television broadcasts are made. Within the city there is a distinct community, West Garden Grove, which is situated in the furthest west portion of the city. It is connected to the rest of the city by a thin strip of land that runs along Garden Grove Boulevard. The city was originally founded by Alonzo Cook in 1874. The post-World War II boom in population and economy led to rapid development in the area, and Garden Grove was officially incorporated as a city in 1956 with approximately 45,000 residents. By 1960 the population had grown to around 85,000, and by 1970 it was almost 120,000. In the late 1970s and 1980s the Asian ethnic population of the area increased, as a large amount of primarily of Korean and Vietnamese citizens began to locate into the area. Recently, Harbor Boulevard has turned into a thriving tourism and entertainment district, served by its nine high-rise hotels. The city if also the location of the headquarters of the Government of Free Vietnam, a self-styled anti-Communist group. Out of the 65,102 registered voters living in Garden Grove; 40.1 percent are Republicans compared to 39.1 percent registered Democrats. The remaining 20 percent are either registered with one of the many smaller political parties or they declined to state their political affiliations. The classic song "Garden Grove", by Long Beach based band Sublime, was named after the city from their self-titled 1996 album. The weekly broadcast of the religious television program, The Hour of Power, has been televised from the Crystal Cathedral in Garden Grove since the 70s. Garden Grove is also the home to three stage theaters, the Festival Amphitheater, the Garden Grove Playhouse, and the Gem Theater. The Amphitheater hosts an annual Shakespeare festival every summer. All of the venues are city-owned, but are operated by private entities.
